Hot Hair Topics

1.    Healthier Hair Color
“ How can I prevent my color-treated hair from breaking and fading?”
- Hair that breaks easily is either fine or has been overly bleached. Hair color fades eventually, but to help impede this shampoo less frequently, avoid heat-styling more than twice a week, use protective products, and make sure to drink plenty of water. We recommend taking biotin supplements. Product recommendation – Moroccan Oil Scalp Treatment

2.    Building Body
“My hair is oily at the roots but dry at the ends. Why?”
- Shampooing everyday can strip away natural oils and now your scalp is overproducing oil to make up for it. Try shampooing every other day and only condition the middle to the end of your hair. Invest in dry shampoo – it’s a great substitute for shampooing everyday and is a huge time saver. Product recommendation – Big Sexy Hair Hairspray

3.    Fighting Frizz
“My thick, straight hair gets frizzy no matter what I do.”
- Invest in a frizz-fighting cream or serum. Massage a quarter size amount into damp or dry hair from root to end. Finish by blow-drying your hair with a large round brush to smooth it out. Product recommendation – Bed Head Control Freak Serum

4.    Waves Made Easy
“ How do I get those sexy, tousled beach waves every celeb has?
- For fine to thin hair, start with a volumizing mousse. For thick hair, use a spray volumizer. Blow your hair out with a round brush then separate it into sections. Spray the sections with flexible hold hairspray and start wrapping pieces of hair around a one-and-a-half-inch curling iron. Once you’re done run a finishing cream through the hair. Product recommendation – Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Curl Boosting Mousse

5.    Split-End Solution
“ I’m trying to grow my hair long, but my split ends are preventing growth.”
- Have your stylist trim just your split ends every 10 to 12 weeks. Don’t fall victim to the products that promise they will repair your split ends. Leave-in creams are your best option for hiding split ends. Product recommendation – Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle

6.    Hiding Grays
“ How do I cover stray grays?”
- Root touch-up pens are a great temporary solution for masking gray strands. A secret trick used my professionals and celebrities is a matte eye shadow. Just apply with a wet brush and dab on. Product recommendation – Oscar Blandi Root Touch-Up Pen

Stop Over Washing Your Hair: Work a Dry Shampoo into Your Routine!

If you don't like the feeling of going more than a day without washing your hair or you're sick of spending all morning underneath the blow dryer, consider the alternative of dry shampoo. Dry shampoos can be used in place of washing your hair in between hair washes to keep your hair looking clean and refreshed. Hold the can about two inches away from the scalp, spray, and then style hair as usual.

Tools to Tame your Locks

We have come a long way from hot rollers and velcro-based curlers. In todays hair care isles you will find items that sound like they were NASA’s brainchild. The terminology is confusing, but what’s worse is finding the right tool for you – that is where we can help! This is your go-to guide to take the turmoil out of the terminology and turn your mane into a head of hair any girl would envy.

First, lets start with the terms:

Ceramic – the heat source in your tool is made with ceramic instead of metal. Ceramic will regulate itself and will prevent over-heating (decrease in heat = decrease in damage). Ceramic will also make your hair smoother, shinier, and seal in the moisture.

Ionic – negative ions are used to shrink water droplets and neutralize static-causing positive ions. This cuts the drying time and prevents frizz.

Nano – water molecules are broken down into tiny particles. This allows more moisture to seep into your hair and decreases frizz.

Tourmaline – this is a stone that releases negative ions and far-infrared (aka long wavelength) heat. It knocks out static producing positive ions, reduces drying time, and closes hair cuticles leaving your hair silky smooth.

So what are the best tools for your hair?

Curly Girls – go for tools that say ceramic, ionic, or nano. These properties will smooth the hair and drop the drying time. Ionic dryers will save you time and ceramic or tourmaline curling irons can give your hair a more defined look.
-                Dryer: Chi Rocket Professional
-                Curling iron: Amika Curler

Stick Straight – tools with any of the properties are great for your hair. Try tourmaline to reduce drying time lessening the damage done by heat.
-                Dryer: Revlon Tourmaline Ionic 1875 Watt Dryer
-                Straightening iron: Sedu Icon Prive

Limp/Fine Hair – try using a round ceramic brush to give your hair volume and dryers with different heat settings are important for your thin delicate strands.  Preventing your hair from overheating will help deter breakage and maximize its growing potential. Using a dryer with multiple properties will help prevent static.
-                Dryer: Conair Infinity Tourmaline Ceramic Ionic Hair Styler 223X
-                Brush: Olivia Garden Ceramic + Ion Mega

Girl-on-the-go –No need to subject yourself to damaging effects of a hotel wall-mounted dryer. Different ceramic dryers and flat irons now come travel-size!
-                Dryer: Andis 1875 Ceramic Folding Dryer with retractable cord.
-                Straightening Iron: Babyliss Pro Nano Titanium

Bonus: To dry hair in even less time try a brush with synthetic and bore bristle combo. Bore bristles are gentle on the hair and synthetic bristles will dry hair faster!

Wrinkle Reducing Pillowcases, They Do Exist!

The very sheets you sleep in every night could be contributing to those unwelcomed facial lines.  Try swapping our your standard pillowcase for a copper one.  Copper upregulates the secretion of extracellular skin proteins and stabilizes the extracellular matrix, improving skins texture.

Pillowcases containing copper oxide have been known to progressively improve skin’s appearance and reduce facial wrinkles.  By sleeping on these copper oxide-containing pillowcases you will notice results in your skin’s overall texture and appearance as well as a reduction in the depth of wrinkles.

If you’re interested in purchasing a pillowcase that is easier on your hair, try satin pillowcases, which reduce friction and frizz!

Myth vs. Reality

1. Myth: Plucking one gray hair will lead to more growing in its place.

Reality: Your scalp is made up of follicles and only one strand of hair grows from that root.  Gray hairs can appear more dull and wiry, making it seem like they are multiplying every time you pluck one.  More grey hairs do not grow out if you pluck one.  To blend greys, try using hair powder like Bumble and Bumble’s Hair Powder.

2. Myth: Greasy foods cause acne.

Reality: It’s not so much the oil but the carbs that can trigger breakouts.  The intake of high glycemic, starchy, and sugary foods has been linked to the contribution of blemishes.

3. Myth: The secret to dewy skin is drinking a lot of water.

Reality: Chugging bottle after bottle of water won’t give you any extra glow.  The truth is dewy skin is a result of oil, not water.  To achieve that hydrated, dewy look try to avoid washing with lathering soaps.  Try an exfoliating wash with glycolic acid or grainy washes to manually remove dead skin cells.

4. Myth: The more the better when it comes to topical products.

Reality: Combining several anti-aging products on your skin can cause irritation, leaving you with a less desired result than before.  Ingredients in wrinkle reducers such as retinol, vitamin C, and glycolic acid when mixed with each other can lead to a red, flaky complexion.  Try only one product at a time.  Introduce new products only after your skin has no redness or is immune to products.

5. Myth: Pricey, professional facials are my only solution for perfect skin.

Reality: Be your own esthetician!  Unclog those pores with a simple two-step system that’s as easy as exfoliating.  First, exfoliate using an acid-based cleanser, such as Glytone Gel Wash sold in our office that gets deep into the pores to remove embedded sebum and dirt.  Then, with a rotating electric brush such as Clarisonic’s Mia, slough away dead skin cells with a gentle cleanser.  This regimen will help your skin absorb the product for a deep clean.

FAQ: You asked, I answered...

Q: How can I keep my hair looking great on rainy days?

A: Develop a frizz-proof plan.  Start your day off by soaking your hair in an anti-humidity cream such as Living Proof’s Prime Style Extender that weightlessly repels moisture.  Next, use a curling iron or straightener to seal your hair’s cuticles so water won’t enter and make strands swell.  Whether it be a high sock bun or a low side braid, choose a no-fuss up do and spray it with an anti-frizz hairspray.  This serves as a barrier between your hair and the humidity in the weather.  Don’t forget to pack an umbrella to shield your luscious locks from that unexpected sudden drizzle.
